Bulldogs Complete Stunning Season

Mornington’s women’s football side has won a premiership in its inaugural season after leading all-theway to beat Beaconsfield by 22 points, 6.7 (43) to 3.3 (21), in the VWFL South East flag grand final at Shepley Oval, Dandenong on Saturday night.

Bulldogs captain Vicki Sanford, who was voted best-on-ground by the umpires, said team unity was at the heart of the triumph. “Everyone is all-in, it’s for everyone. We support each other all the time. It’s just amazing … we are one big family, pretty much,’’ she said. With the premiership cup in hand, the jubilant Bulldogs returned to the Mornington club rooms for a sleepover on Saturday night, although it’s doubtful much sleep was had.

The man behind the success, coach Gary Sanford, said half a dozen of the girls played in the inaugural MPJFL youth girls team four years ago. “It’s almost like it was four years in the making, getting this group back and other players joining to form a pretty strong team,’’ he said. “On and off the field, they are such a tight unit.’’ Mornington trailed by a point at quarter time but hit the front in the second term and refused to yield. It kept Beaconsfield to only one point after halftime.

Tahli Westlake, back in the side after being concussed in the last round, sparked the Bulldogs with a sizzling first half. Lucinda Strong played a key tagging and kicked a goal, while Laura Noonan, Ginger Parker and Elizabeth Muir impressed. Mornington won 14 of the 16 games it played this season.

Mornington 2.1, 4.3, 5.4, 6.7 (43) d Beaconsfield 2.2, 3.2, 3.3, 3.3 (21).
